Guasha

What is Guasha?

Guasha is a Chinese medicine technique that also goes by the name of spooning or scraping. Don’t be put off by the name though as it actually feels really good. And no, it isn’t that type of spooning. Gua means to scrape or rub; sha is a ‘reddish, elevated, millet-like skin rash’ (petechiae).

Your acupuncturist is highly trained in this technique that involves a specialised technique of fast strokes with a smooth-edged object (usually a Chinese ceramic spoon – hence the name) over your muscles or acupuncture meridians/points. The technique will leave tiny red spots on your skin (petechiae) and your skin will feel very warm straight after the treatment.

What is Guasha used for?

As guasha leaves the skin warm after a treatment, traditionally this technique is thought to release excessive heat from the body. The fast massage style technique may also help ease tension in the body and move stagnation in the meridians.
