Pain Management
Whether you’ve got a stiff neck from computer work, you’ve been battling with stubborn plantar heel pain, or sciatic pain that has you bed ridden, then you know that pain can seriously affect your quality of life.
At the Health Connect Shen Clinic, we aim to understand and address your pain in a holistic and evidence-based way to provide relief or management of your symptoms as quickly as possible. The way that your pain affects you, the length of time you have experienced it and the cause of your pain are all factored into developing individualised treatment plans drawing on appropriate skills and techniques from your practitioner; combining into a multi-modality approach as required for optimal results.
Most people think of managing pain firstly when asked what acupuncture may assist patients with (although it certainly isn’t limited to only pain relief). Research also supports acupuncture for relieving symptoms of many painful conditions, some of which are detailed here. According to this systematic review and this systematic review acupuncture alone or with usual care may provide some relief for chronic low back pain and poor function. There is evidence to support the use of acupuncture as being superior to Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) for relieving symptoms of acute low back pain.
When it comes to the pain caused by knee osteoarthritis, acupuncture has been shown in a meta-analysis to be “one of the more effective physical treatments for alleviating osteoarthritis knee pain in the short-term”.
Migraine sufferers may benefit from a review that found ”acupuncture may well be considered as a useful short term prophylactic treatment option in migraine patients particularly those with lack of response or adverse events to oral pharmaceutical agents.’’ The same review found that acupuncture may be considered as a non-pharmacological treatment alternative for tension headaches.
